Ever since the Houston Astros won their first World Series crown, on 1 November 2017, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers, baseball fans have been asking which one of the remaining seven teams who have never won the series will be the next to achieve success.
We are going to take a look at each of these teams; each of which originated as an expansion team. What are their strengths and weaknesses, and do any of them look likely to follow on from the Astros’ success?
San Diego Padres
The Padres are currently in the process of rebuilding. But, it’s not going to be an easy process. They are still likely to be in the shadow of teams like the Giants, that have more financial clout. There is no doubt that the Padres were unlucky in facing exceptional opposition in their two forays into the World Series. That being said, it does not seem as though there is anything to suggest their luck will change anytime soon. Their first World Series crown does not seem to be within grasp at present.
It’s hard to see the Mariners’ sixteen-year playoff drought ending in the near future. They have promised to close in on success so many times, but have never fulfilled that promise. The current team is now aging, and the deals which are being made do not inspire much hope for a successful future.
Rockies fans believe that the breakthrough they made in 2017 was the start of something more impressive. Although, it could just as easily have been a one-off. Players such as Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado can certainly impress, but is that really a good enough reason to believe that the Rockies can achieve World Series success at last? This remains to be seen.
This team were what the Astros are now, back in 2011; young and full of talent. The problem is that the promise fans could see back then has never really been fulfilled. Even worse, the Rangers seem to have lost momentum. Their World Series chances are certainly not dead in the water, but they do not look as lively as they used to.
Tampa Bay Rays
For around six years now, the Tampa Bay Rays have been one of the big sleeper tips for the World Series. This does not seem to look like changing for next year. They certainly have the potential, but if their hitting starts to miss like it did this year, their hopes could be dashed again.
This is one team that might be a good bet for following what the Astros have achieved. It’s about time that they followed up their only World Series appearance of 35 years ago. In that appearance they were up against the Cardinals who are still rivals to this day. Although they were in contention this year, the Brewers’ fight faded towards the end. Maybe next year will see them go further.
Given that the 2018 season is Bryce Harper’s last before he becomes a free agent, the Nationals could really do with achieving a World Series win. They are actually the team with the best chance of doing so, from this list of seven. But they need to get out of the division series to do so, something they have struggled with. Given their good chances, it might be worth placing a bet on Washington Nationals for the 2018 World Series. Just remember to check out terms and conditions, and you might be celebrating a win at the same time as the Nationals.
Whether any of these seven teams follows in the Astros footsteps in 2018 remains to be seen. If any of them are going to make the big step forward, it seems that the Rays, Brewers or Nationals are the most likely prospects. We will be watching all the action with great interest.
