Toronto Blue Jays Set to Acquire Melvin Upton Jr. From Padres

uptonThe Toronto Blue Jays have have reached an agreement with the San Diego Padres to acquire outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Upton, 31, is batting .256 with 16 home runs, 45 RBIs and a team-leading 20 stolen bases. Upton will make $15.45 million this season and $16.45 million next season, the final year of a five-year deal that he signed with the Braves before the 2013 season.

He’ll join a Blue Jays outfield that features Jose Bautista, who is just off the DL because of a toe injury, All-Star Michael Saunders and Kevin Pillar.

The Cleveland Indians and Baltimore Orioles are among the other teams that reportedly were interested in Upton ahead of the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline.
